:: BOLT ENERGIZED ::
Taper-Lok®’s design, based upon the
wedge principal, leverages relatively small bolt loads to
generate large sealing contact pressures. In the pre-bolted
condition, the seal ring stands proud of the female flange
with a gap between the lip of the seal and the face of the
female flange.
During bolt up, the converging seal
surfaces are wedged together. Forcing the seal ring
into the female pocket. This causes the seal ring to
compress tangentially as the diameter decreases. The
reaction of this compressive force generates the high contact
pressures across the sealing surfaces. Both seal surfaces
slide against each other under a high contact stress. The
high pressure sliding burnishes the seal surfaces removing
any light imperfections.
The large seal surface area
reduces the chance that other imperfections will result in
a leak. |
