Taper-Lok® connections are suited to withstand various external loads due to the wedge shape configuration of the seal. Taper-Lok® flanges perform exceptionally well under external loads because the applied external loads do not significantly change the contact pressures. In fact, bolt yielding would occur before gasket separation occurs. And as our bolt-up loads are small the integrity of the seal is assured; the exact opposite is true of an ANSI flange where in under external loads it is expected that the contact pressure will be significantly reduced in the seal before bolt yielding occurs.
